Research: The importance of sound

People may think that the visuals are the essential part to a film but actually we should not forget the importance of film sound. If there was no sound in horror films the audience would not be as affected as a horror film with sound.

The background music is used to add emotion and rhythm to a film. Usually a lot of people do not notice some background as they are so into the film that they are concentrating on what could happen next. However the background music could also change the mood of the film in itself it can foreshadow a mood for example dissonant music may be used to indicate something might be coming but not visible at the current time. Sound can be used before a jump scare or after. Leading up to a jump scare the music is less intense then gradually it increases to the point of the event taking part. Music before the event gives the audience a sense of suspense and tension and can have an affect of the visual. A very good example of this is the classical film Jaws. In the movie Jaws the music was a key aspect as each time there was going to be an attack the music was played to create the atmosphere of suspense and tension towards the audience. If there was no music every time a attack occurred people would just think that someone was swimming in the ocean and wouldn't give the scary creepy scare factor of which a horror film needs.

Back before sound was put into movies films were not as scary as when music has been put in this is because when there was no sound there was nothing leading up to the scare it was just a visual image whereas now the sound has been put into horror films it makes the build up intense and the jump scare becomes more scary. Jump scare is a big aspect of horror film conventions so this convention is perfect just as the music builds up.
