Research : The importance of opening titles

Dead Wood

Right at the beginning of dead wood we do not see any visuals just the symbolic code of birdsong.Straight away the audience have been affected as they believe there is sense of innocence and peace. The audience have actually been given a fake sense of security as the music increases and is soft.As this is going on the audience are going to be completely unaware of what is coming the 'Jump Scare'  which therefore makes it more effective.Once the jump scare has happened he music has crescendo within the soundtrack which also adds to the scare as it gets the audience going and adrenaline starts to kick in.

In the final part of the opening Robs friend is calling him and a crane shot is used and slowly finishes the scene. When a camera is looking down on a character is shows a sense of vulnerability and in this case shows how vulnerable she is as she is in a secluded and isolated place as we know this from the crane shot. The audience have no clue what or who killed Rob so the audience are intrigued to find out what this creature was. This was done as it will build up and be revealed later on in the film also this creates a fear factor as who knows what thing disasterous creature is capable of.

The conventions of dead wood:
1) The secluded location, this isolates the protagonist and the protagonist will struggle for help and this is what makes the creature chasing rob more significant as he is the only one who can do something about it.
2) Cliched jumpscare : Scares the audience and makes audience feel on edge.
3) Short cut: The expectation of the route being shorter but actually it's the wrong route to take for example rob tries to jump to safety but actually fails and gets dragged to his death.

Dead Mary

During dead Mary the main conventions used at the beginning are close ups of abandoned objects and signs. The broken down car with no nothing around them but woods and a road set the scene for a isolated location.

The camera shots at the beginning of dead Mary are extreme close ups which eventually puts the setting together. The shots fade with one another and become out of focus for example the shot of the eyes looking down freon the woods to the car. This shot them changes and goes to the girl in the car which we can see is bored and fed up through body language possibly indicating she is waiting for someone.Another convention that is used is the 'no signal'  as the women in the car tries the radio and phone but both of which have no signal. When she does turn the radio a loud noise of which sounds like a sinister noise comes through and then it goes to a closeup shot from the Forrest emphasising that something is watching and is present.A jump scare is used later on when the partner of the women returns with canisters of petrol which hits the floor. This then kills the tension of boredom.

Wrong turn

In the wrong turn the convention used is a establishing shot. This is of a large forest also being filmed with loud crashing thunderous background music tot the show the audience the mood of the film due to the tone of sound. After the establishing shot it then goes on to a male and female climbing a cliff.Mise en Scene is used in this clip as they are both in climbing gear and have climbing equipment. The shot used is a crane shot clearly showing the female is behind therefore emphasising that the male is quicker  and stronger than the female. Further on in this scene the male reaches the top and the female become agitated as she is getting tired and only halfway up. For about 5 seconds all sound is cut and all the audience can hear is the natural Forrest noises and birds chirping. The female starts to call for help but there is no reply from the male indicating that there maybe trouble or  something is about to happen or possibly he is just messing around. Then a jump scare occurs as the shot changes to a low angle shot from the females perspective looking up at the her dead male partner. There is now a sense of panick as the mysterious creature that the audience have no clue about start to try and pull the female up indicating the creature wants to kill her too.The female then falls and the creature is chasing her but still we do not see this creature as lots of different shot have been taking in a small period of time to show and set panick for the audience and just as the female is about to escape to safety she falls over and we know the creature has got her. This can be seen quite a lot in horror films as this is a  convention of escape as not a lot of characters survive to escape to safety.
